About the Project

Crossway Student Ministries, a religious outreach for students grades 6-12, hosts a weekend event called iServe, which is part service project, part fun. The event is a popular staple of their organizational calendar and is attended by roughly 200 students and adult volunteers. Each year, the theme is updated to speak to the student audience at the time. This year, FOR was chosen to discuss how the church should be known by what they are for, more so than what they are “against.”

For the 2019 retreat, I worked closely with the youth pastor to plan the event as well as produce all the creative elements - promo materials, illustrations, on-screen visuals, t-shirt design, content booklet, social media posts, and recap videos.

visual theme

Part of what makes this event so endearing to students is its homegrown nature and the fostering of an authentic community. To fit with this background and embrace the “rough” nature of iServe, a visual theme was developed that utilized imperfect and tactile design elements. Torn paper, scotch tape, film photos - various assets were developed and utilized to carry this handmade feel.

Gen Z wants to connect and belong, so real photographs from previous retreats were used in branding and marketing elements, celebrating the community they have been creating.

Event Booklet

A 35-page booklet was created to house everything the students might need for the weekend, plus space for doodling and fun things too. Schedule, camp map, instructions for contests, and reflection questions all wrapped into one convenient place.

Commemorative Tee

Attendants are given a unique t-shirt designed specifically for each year’s theme. I chose a laid-back blue t-shirt to backdrop a framed illustration I created based on the camp grounds.

Included is this year’s tagline: What will you be for?

Promo Material

Promotional material showcased the brand translated into posters, info cards, and social media graphics. All allowed the event to easily be marketed directly to students, both online and in person.

Recap Video

A wrap-up video was shot and edited by me over the weekend and played at the final main session.
